BACKGROUND
Vook project stemmed from my friend’s experience of watching English videos online. He is a huge fun of American episodes.
He has been watching English videos for 10 years. To my surprise, his English is still at the entry level and his vocabulary is very
limited. The ten years English-video-watching experience didn’t help to improve his English skill nor increase his vocabulary. Then
I found out this is a common problem among people from not English speaking countries, I dug into this issue and identified
the problem is the way people watching foreign language videos. HMW solve the problem and create positive impacts
through a new video watching user experience?
GOAL
Create a vocabulary acquisition cycle for users to grasp new vocabulary and recall learnt vocabulary through video-watching
experience.

I conducted secondary research and interview according to my research plan
Usability testing
I invited ten testers to participate in my experiment. They all have experience of watching foreign language videos
online. I conducted usability testing on the video platforms, like Amazon video, Youtube and Bilibili, the selection of
the platform based on my testers’ habit. I gave them three tasks to do on their selected platform,
1. Choose a video you would love to watch and start to watch. 2. Set up your prefered caption 3. Find out the vocabulary or idiom which you don’t understand during the video.
The interview and usability testing helped me identify the problem that I needed to address. After conducting the usability testing I
mapped out the user journey according to the data I collected and identified pain points in the experience. I realized that the pain
points occurred not only during the video play process but also before and after the process.
